Yellowknife speedskater Michael Gilday says he's disappointed he didn't bring home an Olympic medal.

Gilday is now back in Canada after competing at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

Yellowknife speedskater Michael Gilday says he's disappointed he didn't bring home an Olympic medal, given that his team had the pedigree to make it to the podium.

He says the speedskating team had the pedigree to make it to the podium and it's tough not reaching that goal.

"I really, really wanted to bring back a medal to the territories," he said.

"We've never had anyone from the territory medal at the Olympics and I think that would have been cool. I really wanted to come back and show that off to all the kids around the territory. But everybody who goes to the Olympics doesn't win a medal — most don't."

Gilday says his emotions are "a little bit raw."

"And that's why we love doing sport as well," he said. "Because it brings out the emotion in everybody."

Gilday's team faced some challenges this Olympics, including his teammates falling during competition and Gilday being disqualified for touching another skater.

Gilday says he hasn't decided yet if he'd like to compete in the next Winter Olympic Games. Right now, he's preparing for the World Speedskating Championships in March.
