N.W.T. MLAs say the next territorial election will be shifted to Nov. 23, 2015, if the federal election takes place as scheduled on Oct. 19, 2015.
Municipal elections in N.W.T. for tax-based communities are also scheduled for Oct. 19, 2015. The N.W.T. election had been scheduled for Oct. 5, 2015.
In a news release, Inuvik Boot Lake MLA Alfred Moses said the main reason for the change is a concern that in small communities, the same staff often act as election officials for both federal and territorial elections.
Should the federal government announce a change to its election date before April 1, 2015, then the date of the territorial election will be Oct. 5, as originally planned.
