N.W.T. brings home silver at national curling tournament
Skip Jamie Koe says team 'disappointed' they didn't win gold
The Northwest Territories is coming home with the silver medal from the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in North Bay, Ont., but the team's skip says the team is "a little disappointed."
Jamie Koe, who grew up in Yellowknife, says the team went to the tournament to win, and so it's tough to settle for the second spot.
"We really wanted to win that first one for the Northwest Territories at a national championship," Koe said.
Koe's twin sister Kerry Galusha curled third for team N.W.T.
She posted this photo on Twitter shortly after receiving her medal.
Team N.W.T., which also includes Robert Borden and Megan Cormier, lost 7-4 to Saskatchewan in the final game Saturday.
Koe says it came down to the fifth end when Saskatchewan skip Max Kirkpatrick made a shot for two and got ahead of the N.W.T. again.
Koe says after that, his team couldn't get back in the lead.
"We just couldn't get those points back, although we tried our best," Koe said. "I thought we played a pretty good game, but they just made everything."
Koe says mixed curling can be challenging because players aren't with their regular teammates and there's sometimes a different dynamic with both men and women on the team.
But he says he has played with his sister many times in the past, and says the team meshed well.
"Once we take a couple days to get over the loss, I think we'll be pretty proud about it," Koe said.
