Man charged with murder after stabbing in Fort Good Hope, N.W.T.
Stabbing happened the same day a wildfire forced the community to evacuate
A 53-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder after a stabbing in Fort Good Hope, N.W.T.
In a Wednesday morning news release, RCMP said Floyd Kakfwi has been charged and is expected to appear in court Wednesday.
The charge comes more than a month after Harley Pierrot was stabbed, which happened June 15 — the same day a wildfire prompted the community's evacuation.
He died in hospital on June 28.
Family members told CBC earlier this month they were nervous to go back to Fort Good Hope for Pierrot's funeral, since no one had been arrested yet. They expressed concern the evacuation may have interfered with the police investigation.
RCMP said Wednesday they had initially arrested Kakfwi on June 15, but released him once the evacuation order was issued.
They said they had charged him at the time with aggravated assault.
On July 22, RCMP re-arrested him and charged him with second-degree murder.
