Missing N.W.T. teen's body found in Great Slave Lake
Searchers looking fortwo Yellowknife teens who went missing a week ago on Great Slave Lake foundone of the boys'bodies on Thursday, police have confirmed.
Behchoko RCMPsay they are not releasingthe identity of the boyuntil they can notify the next of kin.
"The body was found without a lifejacket. There's a number of explanations that could be used for that," Sgt. Francis Cullen said Thursday afternoon, adding thatin cases of hypothermia, some people strip lifejackets and other layers of clothing.
"He could have slipped out of the jacket, any number of things,"Cullen said. "He was partly clothed; he had the red shorts on that we expected him to be wearing.
"It an obvious drowning," he added. "The body had been at the bottom of the lake for a while. After 10 days or so, it floated to the surface."
The bodywas recovered about 600 metres from the point wherepolice expected the boys to haveentered the water at the lake's North Arm, Cullen said.
"We were highly suspicious they had gone under the surface and were somewhere in the lake, and the body floated about 600 metres from where we had been looking," he said.
Michael Luzny, 18, and Randy Leisk, 15, went missing Thursday aftertheir boat ran out of gas near Behchoko, N.W.T., on the lake's North Arm.
The two tried to swim for shore, while a third friend stayed in the boat and was located by the RCMP.
Family, friends and community members have been searching for the pair since the RCMP called off official efforts on Monday.
Police said at the time that there was no sign the young men had made it out of the lake.
Up to 10boats with relatives, friendsand other volunteers continued searching the area Thursday. Theysay they will continuetheir search until 11 p.m. MT, and resume Friday with searchers from Hay River joining in.
