His father, Quvianaqtulia Tapaungai, says the 24-year-old has been a hunter his entire life and he knows about cabins in the area and how to navigate. His father said he did not have much by way of supplies, since he had only planned for a day trip. Though he said his son had a gun and his snowmobile was in good working condition.

There were periods of snow in Cape Dorset on Thursday afternoon, and temperatures were at about –11 C.

Tapaungai's father said he taught his son that weather is the boss and to stay put when the weather is bad.

A search and rescue team of eight people are looking for Tapaungai, said RCMP spokesperson Henry Coman Thursday.

Search members are using satellite phones to keep in touch, said Coman.
