Mice in Whitehorse school making parents jumpy

Department of Education plans extermination for holidays

New Democrat MLA Jan Stick says Christ the King elementary school in Whitehorse is being overrun by mice.

She said in the legislature this week that mice have been seen running across carpets, desks and even keyboards during classes but she's been told school officials aren't too concerned about it.

"The parents at the school council meeting were told that all schools have mice and not to worry," she said.

"While the school break is approaching quickly, this would be an ideal time to fumigate this school."

Chris Madden, a communications officer with the Department of Education, said there have been three recent mouse sightings at the school.

He said most large buildings in Yukon do have mice, including schools.

"It's not uncommon but when it does happen, pest control is contacted immediately and we do everything we can to rectify the problem," he said.

Madden said exterminators will use the upcoming holiday to deal with the mice at Christ the King.
