Two investigators with the Medicine Hat Police Service are expected to arrive in Yellowknife today to investigate how a woman was seriously injured while in an RCMP holding cell.

The woman was alone in the cell on March 26 when she suffered the injury. She had been arrested, but had not been charged.

"If it's something that is fairly straightforward, that entire report could be submitted in a couple of weeks," Staff Sgt. Joe West of the Medicine Hat Major Crimes Section told CBC News. "If it's more complex, or an involved investigation, that could be much longer."

The woman was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital for treatment, but police have neither identified her nor given an update on her condition.
