Jamesie Kootoo failed to return on time from caribou hunt

Blizzard conditions temporarily halted the search for a missing hunter from Kimmirut, Nunavut, Tuesday morning.

The community’s mayor, Jamesie Kootoo, went out to hunt caribou on Saturday and was supposed to return the same day.

Sometime on Sunday, searchers were able to follow snowmobile tracks that they believe belong to Kootoo but they lost the trail because of fresh snow.

Maliktoo Lyta with the search and rescue committee said searchers will be setting up a base camp in a area close to where Kootoo was last seen.

He said searchers have a pretty good idea where Kootoo might be and they will concentrate in that area.

He also said donations will be accepted from anyone who wants to help out financially. People can call the hamlet office for more information about donating towards the search.

On Monday, 22 people were involved in the search.
