Jordin Tootoo holds hockey game fundraiser in Rankin Inlet
Nunavut's NHL hockey star Jordin Tootoo isn't in the playoffs this year with his team the New Jersey Devils, but he's still putting his free time to good use.
Tootoo took part in a hockey game and silent auction Thursday night in Rankin Inlet in support of the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre.
The event was put on by the Team Tootoo Fund, a charity he started in 2011 in memory of his late brother,Terence. It supports non-profit organizations that address suicide awareness and prevention, and youth at risk.
"Far too often we suppress our feelings and that's not healthy for you," he said.
"I changed my life four years ago. I became sober and today I am grateful for that and it's just led me to have more clarity in life and what my purpose is."
Tootoo said he will be in his hometown for another week and is looking forward to spending time with family and friends.
