RCMP standoff with 'armed and dangerous' man in Pond Inlet ends peacefully
Jeffrey Killiktee made threats against individuals and RCMP, say police
A police standoff with a Pond Inlet man deemed "armed and dangerous" has ended peacefully with the man taken into custody late Wednesday night, according to a news release by RCMP.
Police negotiated with 27-year-old Jeffrey Killiktee, who had barricaded himself in a residence, for several hours before Killiktee surrendered and was taken into custody. Charges are being "considered," according to the release.
Police thanked the residents of Pond Inlet for their assistance and patience during the incident, which began Wednesday morning with the RCMP issuing an "urgent" news release requesting public assistance in locating Killiktee.
"A situation is presently unfolding in Pond Inlet," the news release said.
Police said Killiktee had made threats against individuals in the community and the RCMP.
Initially, RCMP asked residents to stay away from the 700, 800 and 1000 block of residences in Pond Inlet. Late Wednesday afternoon, a statement asked that "700 block residents vacate their residence immediately and move directly to safety."
A safe area was set up at the community hall, with meals and accommodations. Police managed to evacuate all residents in the 700 block.
Additional police resources were brought in from Iqaluit to assist with the situation.
