RCMP arrest man after daylong standoff in Iqaluit
Police had asked public to avoid section of Nipisa Street earlier on Wednesday
RCMP officers in Iqaluit have arrested a man and taken three young children into the custody of Child and Family Services following a daylong standoff in the city Wednesday.
Early on Wednesday, police had asked the public to avoid the area between 135 and 141 Nipisa St., as they dealt with a person barricaded inside a home in the area.
Police had blocked off a section of road near the city's 300 block and evacuated homes in the area. Two school buses delivering students to the neighbourhood were cancelled by police, and parents were asked to make other arrangements to get them home.
According to a news release sent at 7:35 p.m. local time, RCMP said people can return to their homes.
Police thanked the people of Iqaluit for their patience, and said more information would be provided on Thursday morning.
