Four communities in the Northwest Territories are set to receive a major boost, as the federal government announced over $2.3 million in infrastructure funding on Wednesday.

Northwest Territories Member of Parliament Michael McLeod and territorial minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Caroline Cochrane made the announcement at the territorial legislature Wednesday afternoon.

The funding — up to $2,338,000 — will come from the federal government's Small Communities Fund. The remaining cost of the projects will be funded through community governments.

The projects announced Wednesday are:

  • Behchoko: 6-bay public works garage — $1,159,000 (federal), $386,334 (community)
  • Ulukhaktok: hamlet office upgrade — $560,000 (federal), $186,667 (community)
  • Sachs Harbour: new arena facility — $494,000 (federal), $164,667 (community)
  • Tsiigehtchic: multi-purpose outdoor recreational facility — $125,000 (federal), $41,667 (community)

Wednesday's infrastructure funding announcement is the second by the federal government this year for communities in the Northwest Territories. In January, the government committed over $8.5 million to infrastructure projects in 11 communities.
