ID now required in Yukon’s municipal elections

Voters across the Yukon go to the polls today to cast a ballot in municipal elections.

Norma Felker, the returning officer for the City of Whitehorse, is reminding voters to bring their ID to the polls today.

"It needs to be something like a driver’s license that shows your date of birth and your residential address," she said.

If voters arrive without proper identification, they will be asked to swear an oath.

For Whitehorse voters there are four polling stations: the gym at Vanier Secondary School, the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre, the Canada Games Centre and the Church of the Northern Apostles.

Whitehorse voter turnout in the last election was less than 40 per cent — something outgoing Whitehorse mayor Bev Buckway hopes will change.

"We've had an unprecedented number of people showing up at the advanced polls so we're hoping starting at 8 a.m. that the people are lined up and they vote all day long and that the numbers are an increase like we've never seen before," she said.
