N.W.T.'s next diamond mine has cleared another regulatory requirement.

Michael Miltenberger, N.W.T. minister of Environment and Natural Resources, has approved the Type A water licence for De Beers' Gahcho Kue Diamond Mine. The mine site is about 280 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife, on Kennady Lake.

The federal government approved the project late last year.

The company still needs to secure final construction and operational permits before full construction gets underway.

Production is expected to begin in 2016.
