Workers at the Fort Simpson, N.W.T. Housing Authority are preparing to strike.

A news release from the Union of Northern Workers says housing authority workers could strike as early as Tuesday if the union and Housing N.W.T. don't reach a deal this week.

Staff with the Fort Simpson Housing authority serve clients from Fort Simpson as well as Jean Marie River, Nahanni Butte, Sambaa K'e and Wrigley.

The news follows a strike vote held by members in August.

The union said low wages have led to staffing shortages, leading to overworking and burnout among employees and poor service for families who rely on the housing.

"Our members have unanimously told us they are ready to take action for fair wages, better working conditions, and improved services for their community," Josee-Anne Spirito, Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) regional executive vice-president for the North region said in the release.

The union said it is urging the employer to return to the bargaining table.
