Fire crews continue to attack a wildfire burning 21 kilometres south of Dawson City, Yukon. And additional support is on the way — firefighters from other parts of Yukon are headed to the Klondike to help out.

The fire was caused by lightning on Wednesday afternoon, and is about three kilometres east of Bonanza Creek. By Thursday morning, it was estimated to be about 164 hectares in size.

Two airtankers and two helicopters are working the wildfire, according to a news release from Yukon Wildland Fire Management.

Crews are also doing a "burn off procedure", to try to contain the fire by removing fuels. The Eldorado Creek Road is closed to the public while that continues.

"This fire is burning in the full response zone and is a top priority for Yukon Wildland Fire Management given its proximity to a number of values," Yukon duty officer Kris Johnson said in a statement.

The closest value is three kilometres from the fire.

Residents in the area have been notified and officials are assessing other values that could potentially be at risk.

"Given the recent lightning in the Klondike region, the public is being asked to be vigilant and report any wildfires," the statement said.
