RCMP in Rankin Inlet say nobody was hurt, but there was "significant damage" from a fire in a housing unit on Monday morning.

Police were called to a 5-unit housing block on 68th street, in area six, at about 9 a.m.

Police said there was significant damage to two end units, and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread further. Rankin Inlet's fire chief later said damage was isolated to the unit that was on fire.

Police say the homes had been evacuated and nobody was hurt.

RCMP investigators are working with the fire marshal and the local fire department to determine what caused the blaze.

The housing units are owned by the Nunavut Housing Corporation.
