Feds, N.W.T., extend affordable housing agreement by $18M over 5 years
Money will likely go to repair funds for low-income homeowners and N.W.T. Housing Corp.
The federal and Northwest Territories governments have set aside $18 million over the next five years to extend the Investment in Affordable Housing agreement.
Some of the money will be earmarked for programs that help low-income homeowners with repairs, and some will help the N.W.T. Housing Corporation repair its own housing units, many of which were built in the 1970s.
"The repairs that we do are often to systems like heating systems, as well as water systems," said David Stewart, president of the housing corporation.
"Many of the repairs involve things like energy efficient windows and those kind of repairs. And roofs to make sure there are no leaks."
The money for repairs will be spent between now and 2019.
The money goes into a fund financed by both governments. Between 2011 and 2014, that fund helped pay for repairs to 311 homes in the territory.
