David Button, a former educator in Inuvik, N.W.T., has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison for the indecent assault of a teenaged boy in the 1970s.

In March, Button was convicted of one count of indecent assault on a male.

The victim, now 51, testified Button sexually assaulted him in a car during a driving lesson in 1978. At the time, Button was a guidance counsellor at Samuel Hearne Secondary School.

The Crown had asked for two to three years of jail time, arguing that Button still hasn't taken responsibility for the crime and is showing no remorse.

The defence asked for a sentence of six to 12 months in jail.

Button is also prohibited from owning a firearm for 10 years and will be put on Canada's sex offender registry.

He was given time and a half credit for the 62 days he's been in custody since he was convicted.
