Doug Graham, one of the Yukon Party government's higher-profile ministers, appears ready to retire.

He announced Wednesday that he will not seek his party's nomination in Porter Creek North, the riding he's represented since 2011.

Graham was named education minister last year after serving as minister of health and social services.

Before his election as MLA in 2011 he served 11 years as a Whitehorse city councillor. He also served as an MLA in the territorial legislature from 1978 to 1982.

In a brief statement on Wednesday, Graham thanked his Porter Creek North constituents for their support.

He did not explain his decision, nor did he reveal his future plans.

The next Yukon territorial election must be called by this fall.
