Dettah man gets 3.5 years for luring teen over Facebook
A Dettah, N.W.T. man has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for sexually assaulting a teenage boy.
In a Yellowknife courtroom on Friday, Justice Karan Shaner called the assault planned and deliberate.
Before Shaner shared her decision, Sangris, 43, spoke softly to the court, saying he was sorry for everything that happened.
He said he realized how his past traumas have affected him and he wants to do better.
In her decision, Shaner considered Sangris' own history of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, as well as the many letters she received in support of Sangris, agreeing that he's "had more than his fair share of hardship."
But Shaner said the nature of Sangris' crime was not motivated by those factors, but by sexual gratification. She agreed with the Crown, saying Sangris manipulated the victim by offering him pornography, cigarettes and alcohol before the assault — and then asking him to keep it all a secret.
The Crown said sexual assaults involving minors are too common in the territory.
"The courts certainly take this seriously and the community does as well," said Brad Demone, Crown Prosecutor. "It's important that our youth are made to feel safe and that this type of defence is denounced."
Along with his time in prison, Sangris has to submit a DNA sample to a national database.
Once he's out of prison, he has to stay away from children for 10 years, unless he's supervised. He'll also have restricted access to the internet for five years.
Sangris' name will also be added to the national sex offender registry for 20 years.
