Michael Nadli, MLA for N.W.T.'s Deh Cho region, has been arrested and charged with assault causing bodily harm after an incident in Fort Providence on Sunday afternoon.

Police in Fort Providence received a call for assistance at around 3 p.m. on Sunday about an individual being assaulted at a residence, according to an RCMP press release issued Tuesday morning.

RCMP say the suspect left the residence but turned himself in to police a short time later.

The victim was treated at the community's health centre for non-life-threatening injuries.

Nadli has appeared in front of a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.

Nadli has previously confirmed to CBC he will run for re-election in the November territorial election.

Tim Mercer, clerk of the Northwest Territories legislative assembly, said an MLA can be removed from office if he or she is incarcerated following a conviction.
