Concussions bench Yellowknife hockey player for season

An 18-year-old hockey player from Yellowknife, who plays in the Western Hockey League, has been shut down for the season after suffering his seventh career concussion.

Tye Hand was a defenceman for the Regina Pats.

He had difficulties recovering from his latest concussion and made the decision — with his team and parents — to stop playing for the rest of the year.

His most recent concussion happened in mid-December when he was checked from behind and his head hit the glass then bounced off the ice.

Hand said he has mixed feelings about the suspension, but is happy the team is concerned about his health.

Hand spoke with Trailbreaker's Loren McGinnis about choosing health over the hockey season.
