Clothing for fire victims taken to dump by landlord: Yellowknife woman
'A lot of it was brand new, still had tags on it,' says Cynthia Grandjambe
A woman who was collecting donated clothing for people left homeless by a recent Yellowknife apartment fire says her landlord took the clothes to the dump.
Cynthia Grandjambe had amassed an assortment of clothes, shoes, boots, bathing suits and jackets. The collection had been piled in front her apartment building.
"A lot of it was brand new, still had tags on it," said Grandjambe.
But she says her landlord, Northern Property REIT, sent a crew to clear away the donated clothes earlier this week. The company, which could not be reached for comment, also owns the apartment building whose residents the clothes were intended for.
"I was under the impression it was going to be donated," said Grandjambe. "I had no idea it was going to the dump."
The Salvation Army says it wouldn't have accepted the clothes because they had been sitting outside.
Grandjambe says despite her disappointment, she'd do it over again if she had to.
