A child has been taken to hospital after being struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of Yellowknife's Mildred Hall elementary school.

The driver of the vehicle told CBC News she reversed her SUV and struck the child, who was sitting on the curb. It happened around 3:30 MT.

She said she did not see the child in her rear view mirror, but heard yelling from others at the playground and realized what happened. She said she then called police and ambulance.

It's not known what condition the child is in.

The parents of the child have been notified, RCMP said.

Police are investigating the incident.
