A seven-year-old boy has died after drowning in Yellowknife's Long Lake Thursday afternoon.

A seven-year-old boy has died after drowning in Yellowknife's Long Lake Thursday afternoon.

Joe Boyd Elatiak, 16, told CBC News that a group of kids ran up to him saying there was a body in the water. Elatiak walked over and pulled the boy from the water.

Police said when they arrived at the scene, a citizen was performing CPR on the child. The boy was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The RCMP and the Office of the Chief Coroner of the N.W.T. are investigating.

The name of the child is not being released at the request of the family.
