Charges laid in Iqaluit standoff
RCMP have laid charges against an Iqaluit resident following an armed standoff early Thursday morning at a Nunavut Arctic College residence.
Tiivi Qiatsuk is facing eight charges, including two counts each of unlawful discharge of a firearm, assault on a police officer with a firearm, and pointing a firearm, and one count each of assault and uttering threats.
RCMP were called to the Arctic College 'Q' residence building 504 – a densely-populated area close to the main campus – at 1:40 a.m. local time Thursday. They found a man with a high-powered rifle, who fired a shot.
Police made an arrest at 5:30 a.m. No one was injured.
In a press release, the RCMP reminded the public to "remain indoors during these types of incidents for their own safety."
