18-year-old charged in stabbing of RCMP officer in Cambridge Bay

An 18-year-old man has been charged after an RCMP officer in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, was stabbed multiple times during an arrest.

Stabbed officer medevaced to Edmonton, condition is improving, says news release

An 18-year-old man has been charged after an RCMP officer in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, was stabbed multiple times during an arrest.

The incident occurred near midnight on Sunday, June 11. According to a news release, RCMP received a call that the man was outside, yelling and waving a firearm. Officers determined the firearm was a pellet gun.

The teenager then ran into the residence and was pursued by police. An RCMP member was stabbed numerous times during the arrest of the suspect, according to the release.

The officer was medevaced to Yellowknife and then to Edmonton. The news release states that "the member's condition is improving at this time."

As a result of the incident, Cambridge Bay's Buddy Mala has been charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. 

Mala remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 27.
