Whitehorse RCMP are investigating after someone broke into the Mae Bachur animal shelter.
Staff say someone pried open a window Thursday night and made off with $400 in cash.
Employees discovered the damage Friday morning. Shelter manager Betty Irwin said the theft wasn't noticed until later.
"I was absolutely in shock when I realized someone had been through the shelter during the night," Irwin said.
"Thank goodness that none of the dogs were let out. They could have opened the doors from the inside and let the dogs out of the cages."
Irwin said none of the dogs appear to be injured. But she said staff are alarmed at how vulnerable the shelter seems to be.
"We're pretty shaken by the experience," Irwin said.
