Hundreds of people packed Yellowknife's Multiplex arena last night for the Memorial Hockey Challenge.

The Montreal Canadien's Alumni were in town taking on a team made up of the RCMP and Fire Division.

It was a 10 - 4 win for the alumni, who had two Yellowknifers on their bench: Dominic Cousineau and 52-year-old rookie Bernie Bennett.

Bennet learned to skate after he won the opportunity to play with the alumni team.

Last night, he did more than that: he scored a goal on a penalty shot.

His wife Diana was thrilled.

"It was amazing," she says. "I couldn't stop smiling. I didn't eat or drink because I was so nervous for him. It was absolutely amazing. It was just a dream come true. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time."

Bennett plans to continue playing hockey.

He's now shooting to play for the Northern Hockey Challenge cup.
