Beating Team Canada 'really good feeling,' says N.W.T.-Yukon skip
Being five months pregnant did not stop Yellowknife skip Kerry Galusha and her team from defeating Canada's best women's curling crew at the Tournament of Hearts in Victoria.
Galusha led her Northwest Territories-Yukon team to a 10-8 surprise upset Tuesday night over Jennifer Jones and Team Canada, the reigning national and world champions.
"It was just a really good feeling to beat Team Canada, because, I mean, they're probably the best team in the world right now," Galusha told CBC News in an interview Wednesday afternoon.
"We had a hard time going to sleep last night. We had a really early game this morning, at 8:30, so we had to get up at 6 a.m., so it was hard to wind down last night after such a big, exciting win for us."
Galusha's Yellowknife-based team includes third Dawn Moses, second Shona Barbour and lead Heather McCagg-Nystrom.
Earlier in the tournament, which began Saturday, the N.W.T.-Yukon rink was defeated by Prince Edward Island, Quebec, New Brunswick, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Prior to the Team Canada upset, Galusha's rink had defeated Newfoundland and Labrador on Monday. And on Wednesday morning, the northern team scored a 6-3 win against Nova Scotia, bringing its record to 3-5.
"We had to re-focus for our game this morning," Galusha said of the Wednesday match.
"We have momentum now. I mean, we were still on the high, but we were pretty tired this morning, so we weren't as sharp as we were last night. So we had to try and stay focused … on our task at hand, and we seemed to do that OK."
Galusha said people at the tournament have been asking about her pregnancy, which she said is really starting to show as she competes.
"People are actually more curious about it, about how I can still play and play so well and still be that pregnant," she said.
"But I've been managing fine. I'm just a lot more tired than I normally would be, and my legs don't get really sore at night; like, they're just tired. So as long as I rest, I mean, it seems to be not affecting me too, too much."
Galusha's rink plays British Columbia at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT) Wednesday night. They are also scheduled to play Alberta and Ontario on Thursday.
