The woman accused of setting a fire that burned down eight Yellowknife townhouses last week was released on bail Friday.

Sheila Jewell, 26, is charged with arson endangering life and mischief endangering life, in relation to the Feb. 28 fire at the Bison Estates rental complex in the city's downtown.

Jewell, who appeared for a bail hearing at a Yellowknife court on Friday afternoon, elected to be tried by judge and jury in the case. If convicted, she could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

She was not required to put up any money to secure her release, but she was ordered to abide by certain conditions.

She cannot have any contact with three witnesses in the case, and she must stay in Yellowknife until she finalizes arrangements for a lawyer.

After securing a lawyer, if Jewell decides to return to her home community of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, she must stay with her mother.

She must also report to the RCMP three times a week.
