7 charged in Iqaluit jail fire, assault

RCMP have charged seven people in connection with two fires and an assault at the Baffin Correctional Centre in Iqaluit Nov. 12.

Two fires were started — one in a bathroom ceiling and another in the gymnasium.

During the investigation, police discovered an inmate was also assaulted at the same time as the fires were set.

Herbert Janes and Willie Ishulutak of Iqaluit, and Sylvester Tarraq of Baker Lake have been charged with arson endangering life and aggravated assault. They are scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 4.

Arnaitok Nuvaqiq, Anawalkooloo Michael, William Auksaq and Geteonie Kopalie, all of Iqaluit, have been charged with aggravated assault. They are scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 27.
