Your need-to-know info for Salmon Festival and Confederation Hill

There are two major music festivals scheduled for Saturday. Here's what you need to know before you head out.

There's two major outdoor concerts in this province happening on Saturday: the Exploits Valley Salmon Festival in Grand Falls-Windsor and Confederation Hill Music Festival in St. John's.

If you're heading in or out of town for either of these shows, or even just down the road, here's what you need to know.

Salmon Fest

In Grand Falls-Windsor, it's time for the annual Exploits Valley Salmon Festival, featuring John Fogerty, Tom Cochrane with Red Rider, Collective Soul, America and The Fables.

While the festival features various events from Thursday to Monday, the big all-day outdoor concert is scheduled for Saturday.

The gates are scheduled to open at 1:30 p.m. at Centennial Park, and the music starts at 3 p.m. Headlining act Fogerty takes the stage at 9:30 p.m.

For the first time, people will be allowed re-entry to the festival. Until 7 p.m., anyone looking to leave and get back in will be given a wrist band to get back to the concert grounds.

This year, children ages 12 and under can get in for free. No one under the age of 19 is permitted in the VIP section.

No outside food or beverages are permitted, but vendors will be set up on Centennial Field.

Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday until midnight, a number of roads in Grand Falls-Windsor will be closed as follows:

  • Cromer Avenue from the overpass to Lincoln Road
  • Southwest ramp of the Cromer Avenue overpass
  • Squires Lane
  • St. Catherine's Street at the Mary March Museum

Parking is available around the venue that's free for concertgoers.

The show is going ahead rain or shine, and general admissions tickets can be purchased for $119.75.

As for camping grounds, there are pre-set prices for sites that can be ordered through the Salmon Festival website.

Confederation Hill

The Confederation Hill Music Festival features Rod Stewart, the Goo Goo Dolls, Blue Rodeo, Sass Jordan, The Navigators and Timber.

Gates open at 2 p.m., with the main stage performances scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. A Homegrown stage will feature local performers between the main stage acts, which starts at 2 p.m.

There are three entrance points for the Confederation Hill Music Festival. A gate at each end of Prince Philip Drive will be open, as well as a west gate from the Confederation Building parking lot. There will be no access from Elizabeth Avenue.

Parking will be available at the Confederation Building for concert patrons.

Prince Philip Drive eastbound from Allandale Road to Portugal Cove Road will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Sunday. The westbound lanes will be closed from 8 a.m. until midnight Saturday.

The City of St. John's advises the following additional road closures, except to local and emergency traffic, from 8 a.m. until midnight Saturday:

  • Gooseberry Lane
  • Simms Street
  • Berrigan Place
  • McNeily Street
  • Shea Street
  • Osbourne Street
  • Emerson Street
  • Downing Street
  • Falkland Street
  • Darling Street
  • Rostellan Street
There is no shuttle service for people headed to the festival. However, a Bud Light-sponsored shuttle service will transport people from the College of the North Atlantic parking lot to George Street starting at 11 p.m., after Rod Stewart's performance wraps up. A total of 15 buses will depart.

In terms of accessibility for people with reduced mobility, there will be a reserved area for people who require it. However, no access will be available in the VIP section. A reservation for reduced mobility needs to be made with event organizers.

There will be no re-admittance allowed. Once you're in, you're in.

There's no outside food or drinks permitted, with the exception of a sealed bottle of water that's one litre or less.

The event is going ahead rain or shine, and tickets can be purchased for $119.89.
