Police in St. John's have issued a public advisory after women have come forward to say they have been drugged and sexually assaulted in the downtown area.

In a news release Tuesday, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said women were socializing in public establishments when they believed drugs were slipped into their drinks.

In the meantime, police are urging people to be vigilant, report any suspicious activity to police and heed this advice:

  • Socialize with trusted friends and stay together.
  • Do not leave beverages unattended.
  • If you feel more intoxicated than expected seek medical attention.
