Hundreds of women filled the streets of downtown St. John's Friday evening as they paraded from Bannerman Park to City Hall in the Take Back the Night march.

The 30th annual event is held every year to protest sexual violence against women.

Janet Frampton took part in the event, in hopes of sending a strong message to her daughter.

"I try to be the best mother I can. I want to show her values and that it's important to be a woman to be able to stand up for her rights as a woman, especially with all the sexual violence on the go, and I hope that she'll learn from it so she'll become a strong individual herself," said Frampton.

Nicole Kieley, with the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre, said the march is about bringing people together against sexual violence.

"We come together to unite and respond as a community, as government, as organizers, individuals, survivors, to respond together, and ultimately that's what were doing, breaking down barriers," said Kieley.

Kieley said last year the centre received about 1,500 calls, and of those about one per day were classified a crisis call.

She said more supports are needed for victims across the province.
