Dog attacked, wolves reported in Happy Valley-Goose Bay
Back away — never run — from a wolf, advises provincial government
Happy Valley-Goose Bay residents are asked to watch out for wolves, after a dog was attacked Wednesday evening.
The Newfoundland and Labrador government issued a statement Thursday that wolves have been reportedly spotted on the back trails of the Department of National Defence Base, near the entrance to the Loppet Trail.
Government has been patrolling the area and didn't see wolves Thursday morning, but are asking residents to be vigilant.
Pet owners in particular are being advised to:
- Keep animals indoors or in confined areas like a fenced yard.
- Limit the amount of time pets spend outside, especially after dark.
- Supervise pets while outside.
The province said officers will continue to look out for the wolves, but anyone who sees one should stay calm, give the animal space, back away slowly (do not run) and avoid direct eye contact.
People are also asked to call the 24-hour emergency line: 709-897-7116.
