William Conway pleads guilty to girlfriend's death

William Conway, 50, has pleaded guilty to charges connected to the death of Veronica Doyle, who was found dead on a street in the Airport Heights neighbourhood of St. John's last October.

Conway was in provincial court in St. John's on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to charges of criminal negligence causing death.

Doyle, 57, was struck and killed with a vehicle on Firdale Drive in Airport Heights in the early hours of Oct. 24.

Conway also pleaded guilty to breaching court orders, including an order to stay away from Doyle.

He is also charged with impaired driving causing death.

Conway pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident of an unrelated incident.

Victim's family hoping for maximum sentence

Family members of the victim were in the courtroom on Wednesday to hear Conway's plea.

Lee Doyle, the victim's daughter, said the family was relieved he pleaded guilty.

"We are pleased with the guilty plea that he entered. At least now we know that he admits killing our mother … we're hoping for the maximum sentence," said Doyle.

The maximum sentence for criminal negligence causing death is 25 years before being eligible for parole.

"Giving him maximum incarceration time is not going to bring back our mother, but it will give her some justice and us as a family so we can have some closure."

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for May 21.
