What are you at? Katrina Healey's pet embroidery
Katrina Healey combines love of animals and love of crafting into one-of-a-kind art
A Christmas gift Katrina Healey received last year has inspired her to combine her love of crafting and her love of animals.
"My godparents gave me a kit for cross stitching last year, then I decided to move into embroidery," said Healey, who lives in St. John's.
She got the idea for pet portraits while browsing the internet for embroidery inspiration.
"I just said 'Hmmm, I'd like to do that for my cats.'"
Healey works from a photo of the pet, tracing the general shape of the animal on embroidery cloth using special markers, then she starts embroidering from the eyes out.
And she said one of the best parts of making the embroideries is the reaction from pet owners when they get the finished portrait.
"It's a really nice thing you can share with the world that's going above and beyond the function of day to day living."
