A coyote that led the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and wildlife officers on a chase around St. John's today has been killed.

It was not immediately clear who shot the coyote.

Reports of the animal were first made to the Department of Natural Resources around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The lone coyote was spotted in the Ropewalk Lane area.

Throughout the day, calls continued to come in from around the city — from LeMarchant Road to Quidi Vidi Lake.

The sightings led an elementary school to keep students inside during lunch hour, as a precaution.

Bishop Feild Elementary made the decision after being contacted by the RNC.

Officers caught the coyote just after 2 p.m. near the McDonald's restaurant on Torbay Road.
