Voisey's Bay workers on strike

More than 200 workers at the Voisey's Bay nickel mine in northern Labrador went on strike Saturday.

More than 200 workers at the Voisey's Bay nickel mine in northern Labrador went on strike Saturday.

The strike involves Vale Inco workers, catering staff and security personnel at the Voisey's Bay mine.

Negotiations between the union and Vale Inco, the company that operates the Voisey's Bay mine, broke off in June.

Workers have been without a collective agreement since March.

The United Steelworkers union has said Vale Inco wants to freeze wages, roll back bonuses and increase the number of temporary workers at the nickel and copper mine.

The strikers joined more than 3,000 workers in Ontario already on strike since early July at Vale Inco operations in that province.

Nickel concentrate from the Voisey's Bay mine supplies Vale Inco operations in Ontario and Manitoba, but that supply will now be halted due to the work stoppage.
