Unique Newfoundland coin sells for $102,000 US
Coin worth $2 when struck in 1865
A one-of-a-kind Newfoundland gold coin has sold for a hefty price in the United States.
The small coin was worth $2 when it was struck in 1865. It recently sold at an auction in Chicago for $102,000 US.
It was possibly the only one made, so that officials could see if they liked the design. The coin didn't pass the test, and another design was later picked.
"It further went into the King Farouk collection out of Egypt. Then it went to the famous Norweb Collection in the U.S. Then it was just recently sold in 1993 I believe for $39,000. And then this past week, it sold for $102,000 U.S."
But the person who just purchased the coin is now looking to sell it.
"People buy these things, hold them for a while, and decide to sell them," O'Driscol said.
"That coin, I just checked, is now available for offers. So the person who bought that coin is entertaining offers on it already."
