Ultimate Fighting: Sheshatshiu rolls out welcome mat for Georges St-Pierre
Sunday's visit to the Labrador Innu community of Sheshatshiu by sports icon Georges St-Pierre won't soon be forgotten.
"This is going to be like one of the best experiences I'll ever have, in my lifetime," said 15-year-old wrestler Mishkushish Pinnette, who has idolized the man known as GSP since he was 10.
St-Pierre is a celebrated mixed martial artist and former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion.
He is from a small town in Quebec called Saint-Isidore, and started learning Kyokushin karate after being bullied by older schoolmates.
He's now recognized as one of the best mixed martial arts fighters in the world.
St-Pierre surprised the sporting world in December 2013 when he announced he would vacate the title and take some time off from the sport.
During his visit to Labrador, the 33-year-old sparred with young athletes and gave some training tips.
He also answered questions, including whether he will return the sport.
"I had pressure when I was competing, I was carrying a lot of bricks, you know, like I say. It's hard to be champion, it's harder to stay champion," he answered.
He also emphasized the importance of a good education.
St-Pierre hasn't decided whether he'll return to competition, but based on his reception in Sheshatshiu, he'll have their support no matter what he decides.
