Trio charged over attack at HMP with broom handle
Three inmates at Her Majesty's Penitentiary have had new charges laid against them following a weekend assault on another man.
Police said a broom handle was used to attack an inmate at the penitentiary on Sunday.
James Glasco, 40, Wayne Murray, 29, and Brian Grech, 26, are all charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
The victim, 28, was treated in hospital and later released.
NAPE president Carol Furlong, whose union represents warders at HMP, said Sunday's attack is the fifth violent incident at the facility since last summer.
Furlong told CBC News the penitentiary has become a more violent place, with prisoners involved in drug and gang activity inside prison walls.
Furlong wants to see the provincial government move fast on plans to replace HMP with a new prison.
