Town can't subsidize Western Newfoundland airport

The town of Stephenville, in western Newfoundland, said Wednesday that it can no longer finance the town's struggling airport.

The town of Stephenville, in western Newfoundland, said Wednesday that it can no longer finance the area's struggling airport.

Mayor Tom O'Brien said the town has given the airport corporation more than $400,000 since September.

"The town has limited financial resources and when you look at 16 per cent total local residential and commercial property tax going into the airport people realize that cannot continue," said O'Brien.

O'Brien hopes the provincial government will give the airport money to make it through the winter.
