They come by two: Duos to see during East Coast Music Week

If you’re a fan of Whitehorse, The Civil Wars or She & Him, you know that some of the most passionate music can come from duos.

If you're a fan of Whitehorse, The Civil Wars, or She & Him — or maybe you watch HBO's Girls and Marnie & Desi come to mind — you know that some of the most passionate music can come from duos.

Four hands and two voices don't limit the creativity coming out of these acts: Tomato/Tomato, Magnolia, and Vogue Dots. They will all be performing during ECMW in St. John's.

Tomato/Tomato

Tomato/Tomato are the husband-and-wife duo of John & Lisa McLaggan. You won't see another pair quite like them. While John's strumming his guitar, Lisa has a whole bunch of things going on: she is rapping on a washboard while keeping the beat with a tambourine and bass drum on the floor behind her, and all the while harmonizing folky, bluegrass tunes.

Magnolia

Magnolia are Leanne Hoffman & Scott MacLean. The couple came together not only to make music but get a lot of inspiration for the songs from their own relationship. Scott picks his guitar accompanying Leanne's silvery voice and poignant lyrics, along with their sultry jazzy sound you might get lost and think you've found yourself in a 1920s speakeasy.

Vogue Dots

Vogue Dots are Babette Hayward and Tynan Dunfield. Both are music producers who came together to create wistful electronic pop. Their ambient music and emotionally charged lyrics have gained a lot of attention for the dynamic electronic duo.
