'There was no avoiding it': Moose collision totals car, spares driver

A driver and three passengers received minor injuries after the car struck a moose on the Trans-Canada Highway just outside Corner Brook on Wednesday evening.

Melissa Crewe says she was driving to Port aux Basques to get the ferry to attend We Day in Halifax. Her mother, a teacher and a fellow student were also in the car.

Crewe said the moose was just three feet in front of the car in the middle lane when she struck it.

"I slammed on the brakes, but obviously there was no avoiding it," she said.

The moose was struck by the passenger side of the car. The roof of the car was peeled back in the impact, and the moose defecated on the front passenger.

The moose took off after the collision, and police were unable to locate it.

Crewe received a laceration on her eyelid and had to get stitches. Her mother, the front passenger, had scrapes and bruises.

The passengers in the back of the car had aches and pains, but no serious injuries were reported.
