The Rooms launches reading series to honour WW I dead

The Rooms is launching a special series of honour readings this weekend to commemorate those who died in the First World War.

Every Sunday until June 26, the names of Newfoundland and Labrador soldiers who died overseas will be read at the museum in commemoration of their "ultimate sacrifice."

The event runs alongside their other preparations for the hundred year anniversary of the battle of Beaumont-Hamel.

Vanessa McBay, a spokesperson for The Rooms, says Newfoundlanders and Labradorians overwhelmingly feel that the battle is one of the most important moments in their history.

"The battle of Beaumont-Hamel really defined, in so many ways, who we are as a people and as a province," she says.

"It is really important for all of us, young generations particularly to keep this going forward, and to remember the ultimate sacrifice that they made."

The event starts Sunday at 7:30 p.m. on The Rooms' steps.
