Last week, the federal government tabled a motion to eliminate the GST on such products, including tampons. The change goes into effect July 1, and applies exclusively to products marketed for feminine hygiene.
The Newfoundland and Labrador government has not said how much revenue it expects to lose by cutting the tax, but the federal government is estimating a $36 million loss.
Women's groups have argued the tax was discriminatory, with advocates across the country saying it is a tax exclusive to females, which represents unequal treatment of some citizens.
